Barbara G. Haines is a Hungarian-born artisan who dedicated fifteen years to theater as a professional ballerina. She received her classical ballet diploma from the Hungarian Dance Academy in Budapest, Hungary and recently graduated with the Professional Award diploma in Benesh Movement Notation (Art of Choreology) at the Royal Academy of Dance, London , England.
Barbara teaches as an adjunct professor of dance, with a focus on classical ballet, early tribal dance history, and musical theater choreography. It is her diverse background and the love of studying ancient folk mythology that has allowed Barbara to evolve, and pursue a path in hand-made FELT, to combine traditional techniques within cultural contexts. The energy she channeled as a dancer is used to transform the visual movements of rhytym as if dancing again. inspired by theater, where every single element influences another real-time motion on its own unique way. |

AS A FELTER, SHE MAINLY WORKS WITH WATER, WHICH LARGELY REPRESENTS WHO SHE IS. WATER IS FLOWING, REFLECTIVE AND ADAPTIVE. AS MUCH AS WATER CAN BE SOOTHING, IT CAN ALSO BE UNPREDICTABLE. THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE IS ONE OF THE QUALITIES THAT SHE APPRECIATES THE MOST IN THE ART OF FELT.
FELT IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE OLDEST TEXTILE. Haines USES A RANGE OF TECHNIQUES IN HER WORK: WET AND NEEDLE FELT, SCULPTURAL FELT AND HAND STITCHING COMBINED WITH MYTHOLOGICAL AND CONTEMPORARY CONCERNS to find the dynamic balance that transforms the invisible information of stillness in movement.
She work primarily with natural substances, i.e., waste wool, plant fibers and natural botanical dyes to express the "ARCHITECTURAL Stillness" that Nijinsky created as a new plastic range to develop modern ballet for later scholars. CONSTANTLY SEEKING TO RENEW INHERITED FORMS THROUGH CONTEMPORARY RHYTHM. THE RHYTHM, THAT CONTRASTS VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL MOVEMENTS, UNIFIES FACTORS IN HER WORK, AND IT HELPS HER TO ACCUMULATE ENERGY TO EACH HAND-CRAFTED PIECE WITH AN EXTENSION OF THE BODY, ITS BLOSSOM.
